.Built in 1927, the Cavalier Hotel was the largest brick structure in the state of Virginia and its beauty and opulence gave Virginia Beach the nickname of the "Jewel Resort of the Atlantic". In addition to beautiful accomodations and nine different dining rooms the Cavalier offered it's guests a variety of leisure activities; including golf, tennis, croquet, skeet shooting, fox hunting, quail hunting, fishing, boating and dancing. Located in the hotel lobby were a stock brokerage office and WSEA radio, only the third station in the country that broadcasted coast to coast.

During the 1930s the Cavalier Hotel was the largest single employer of musicians in the country and anytime, day or night, live music could be heard throughout the hotel from one band or another. It is understable that the Cavavlier cecame the third most popular tourist destination on the east coast and was visited by countless celebrities and seven United States presidents. Some of the notable guests were Bette Davis, Judy Garland, Mary Pickford, Will Rogers, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Presidents Coolidge, Hoover, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon.

During World War II the Cavalier Hotel was closed to the public and was used by the United States Navy, and in the following years things never were quite the same. In the 1970s the grand hotel was closed and almost sold, but a decision was made to restore it to it's original splendor. Today it stands as reminder to those by-gone days.

The restoration of the Cavalier is so complete it seems it is actually visited by some of its former quests. Mr Adolph Coors, who died a mysterious death at the hotel in 1929, has been seen on the sixth floor. A young woman who took her own life has been reported wandering the halls wearing her wedding gown and a young soldier in his uniform waits patiently for his love to join him.
Wet footprints appear by the indoor pool where a young child drowned and in the basement, in a room where a bloody suicide occured, there is a stain on the floor that cannot be removed. There is also the spirit of a cat that has appeared all aroun the hotel and the grounds and there are phone calls that originate from rooms during the winter months when the hotel is closed and locked.
A stay at the Cavalier Hotel will definitely put you in the right "spirit", but don't be surprised if the hotel staff doesn't talk much about those things that go bump in the night. They aren't allowed to.
